Our Approach

At Brain Food, we priotize establishing a nutritional baseline for your child as the first step. Before your first appointment with Jenny Edelstein, we’ll ask you to keep a food diary for your child covering several days, and to complete a confidential new patient questionnaire. At the initial consultation, Jenny will discuss these with you, along with your child’s full medical history, and his or her current physical and mental well-being.

The next step is to identify any basic nutritional issues and to address them along with any gastrointestinal problems. Jenny will provide strategies to improve the balance of your child’s diet and, if necessary, will recommend suitable nutritional supplements and remedies to improve gastrointestinal health.

In some cases simply making basic nutritional adjustments and improving gastrointestinal health may be sufficient to get your child back on the path to healthy and happy development. However, in other cases, Jenny may recommend a special diet for your child. This may involve restricting certain foods such as gluten and dairy, or sugar and food additives, but it will always be individualized for your child’s unique profile. If a special diet is recommended for your child, we’ll provide you with clear, step-by-step instructions on how to implement these changes and what to expect, including meal plans, recipes and demonstrations as needed.

Some parents are surprised not to have a full battery of blood, urine and stool tests ordered from the outset. Jenny prefers to gain a more complete understanding of your child’s health and nutritional baseline before undertaking any laboratory testing. This allows her to focus any recommended testing on specific areas she has identified as problematic. Jenny is also conscious that testing is can be very expensive, as well as being upsetting for sensitive children. As such, she endeavors to keep testing to a minimum. The Brain Food approach is to use laboratory testing as a tool to confirm the diagnosis of your child’s nutritional and health status, not as a fishing expedition.
